Jonah Wedekind is an agricultural sociologist and economist in the fields of agrarian political economy and political ecology, currently working towards a PhD at the department of Agricultural Economics at Humboldt University of Berlin. His doctoral research with the working title 'The Political Ecology of Agrarian Change in Ethiopia: large-scale agricultural investments and institutional shifts in rural resource governance' investigates large-scale land leases for biofuel-crop production and related rural socio-ecological changes in Ethiopia's agrarian political economy.
He previously worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Modern Oriental Studies (ZMO) in Berlin and gained a Master degree in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and a Bachelor degree in Politics and International Relations from University of Southampton. Previous work of his compares the histories of agrarian transition in Japan and Ethiopia, titled 'A Comparative Analysis of Paths to Industrialization: The Functionality of Agrarian Transition in Japan then and Ethiopia now'.
